Website
You can get a website for ₹10,000. You can also get one for ₹5,000, or free with a builder over a weekend. So when a professional quotes ₹50,000 or more, the obvious question is: what on earth costs that much? It's just some pages.
Here's the honest answer, and it reframes the whole thing: you aren't paying for pages. You're paying for everything that happens before, during, and after those pages are built. The pages are the visible tip of a much larger iceberg, and the cheap versions exist precisely because they skip most of the iceberg.
Cheap websites aren't a scam. They're real, and for the right situation they're fine. They exist by using a ready-made template, filling in your text and logo, and publishing. No research, no custom design, no real optimization, no strategy. If you need a basic online presence and nothing more, that can be enough.
The problem starts when a business expects a ₹10,000 website to do what a ₹50,000 one does, bring leads, rank on Google, load fast, work flawlessly on every phone, and grow with the business. It can't, because all the work that makes those things happen was skipped to hit the price. You didn't buy a worse version of the same thing; you bought a different thing.
Here's the work that sits behind a professional website, most of it invisible in the final product but essential to whether it works.
Understanding your business and users before anything is designed, so the site is built for the people it needs to convert. Planning the structure and the pages, wireframing how each one should be laid out to guide a visitor. Designing a custom look that fits your brand instead of a template thousands of others use. Building it properly so it works on every screen size, not just shrinking the desktop version onto a phone. Writing the front-end and back-end code cleanly so it's fast and maintainable. Setting up a way for you to update content yourself. Building the SEO foundation into the structure so search engines can actually rank you. Optimizing performance and images so it loads in seconds, not slowly. Securing it. Adding analytics and conversion tracking so you can see what's working. Testing it across browsers and devices. Deploying it properly. And leaving room to grow.
Every one of those is real work, and every one is a reason the cheap version can't include it. The price isn't padding; it's the iceberg.
Think of it this way. When you pay ₹10,000, you're paying for someone to fill in a template. When you pay ₹50,000+, you're paying for someone to understand your business, design around it, build it properly, make it fast, make it findable, make it measurable, and set it up to grow. The pages look similar in a screenshot. What's underneath is completely different, and underneath is where the results come from.
This is the same logic as custom software, where the cheapest option usually costs the most once it breaks. I wrote about that in how much does custom software cost in India, and the parallel is exact.
Honestly, it depends on what you need. If you want a simple online presence and nothing rides on it, a cheap or template site is a reasonable choice, and I'd tell you so. But if your website is meant to bring you customers, represent your business seriously, rank on Google, and grow with you, then the ₹10,000 version will quietly cost you more in lost leads and an eventual rebuild than the professional one would have upfront. I broke that trap down in the real cost of a cheap website.
The right question isn't "what's the cheapest website." It's "what do I actually need this website to do", and then paying for the scope that genuinely delivers it. I wrote about that shift in why you should ask how much a website is worth, not how much it costs.
If you're trying to work out what your business actually needs, and what it should realistically cost, that's a conversation worth having before you commit to a quote. Tell me what you want your website to do, and I'll help you understand what scope actually delivers it, and I'll be honest if a simpler, cheaper option would serve you fine.
